burren residency

be with the mountain
during this month long residency in the limestone landscape of the burren in county clare I took inspiration from two references
first - the Seamus Heaney poem 'postcript' evoking a profound expression of wonder and love of the 'flaggy shore' landscape
second - Nan Shepherd's the living mountain, an astounding piece of writing of Shepherd's own deep connection to the cairngorms
both of these sources provided a context to considering this unique karst landscape of cracked limestone pavements created over millions of years
ancient
deforestation and human agricultural activity, which began around 6,000 years ago combined with the underlying geology, led to the unique, rocky "glaciokarst" environment seen today
my personal response and connection to this extraordinary landscape is explored in a canvas painted with limestone pigment left out on the hillside for 13 days and through etched lino and mokulito printmaking
